Following "The Dark Places Of The Earth", "Beyond" is the second limited edition sequel to "Others". And just like its predecessor, it sees Lustmord digging deep into its sounds and atmospheres to go back to his "Where The Black Stars Hang" days. Again, gone are the gritty bits and guitars of "Others", as Brian Williams focuses here on what he does best: huge, monumental, pitch black spacial sounds that just need to be listened to as loud as possible. Lustmord is a monument in itself, and, unsurprisingly, I can not recommend this album enough. Mandatory.

ROME - FLOWERS FROM EXILE - GET IT HERE!!!
Into the heart… With ‘Flowers from Exile’, the Luxembourgish folk formation ROME surpass their work to date, which already includes three full-length albums in just a few years. Just as early releases were apocalyptic and aggressive in nature, the expressionistically-tinged CD ‘Masse Mensch Material’ (2008) could be said to have a revealed inner vision. ROME’s universe was expanded by proud resignation and sweet melancholy. The latest album, ‘Flowers from Exile’ (2009) goes a step further in this direction. Similar to the early albums of the legendary songwriter Leonard Cohen, stories from the (inner) exile are told here with fatalistic gestures and dark timbre; of the longing for a lost homeland, of loneliness and eternal travels, but also of unexpected friends far away and the actual homeland in your own heart. Songs such as ‘The Secret Sons of Europe’ or ‘To Die Among Strangers’ (which was previously released as a CD single) form a song cycle full of metaphors for estrangement – the poetry of longing. Highly detailed arrangements use the sound of the flamenco guitar as well as mysterious samples, pulsating beats and sad melodies. In ROME’s songs there lives a stoic sense of the melodramatic. As well as Cohen, one must look to icons such as Tom Waits and late Johnny Cash in order to be able to describe the lyrics and voice of Jerome Reuter. ‘Flowers from Exile’ is just as much an emotional as a critical work. The personally stamped album of a modern singer-songwriter which tells of journeys both within and without. Jerome Reuter’s moving vocals and Patrick Damiani’s complex musical arrangements leave the musical roots of folk far behind and send these ‘flowers from exile’ to all listeners who are willing and capable of feeling the dignity, the hope and the pride behind the lyrics and who are prepared to recognise themselves in those restless spirits whom the twelve part song cycle conjures up. GET IT!!!
Black Math Horseman = Led Zeppelin's bombast + Black Sabbath's rhythm section + 1970s psych rock dilation + Isis' minimal-maximal dynamics. This is a horrible description, I know. But when listening to Wyllt, it's impossible not to hear decades of record collecting riffling by. Parts of "Deerslayer", for example, could have been on Badmotorfinger (Soundgarden chaneling Sabbath), Ritual de lo Habitual (Jane's Addiction channeling Zeppelin), and, of all things, She Hangs Brightly. Sera Timms' mostly cool-tempered voice suggests Nico on 4AD, complete with ghostly reverb. The gauzy "Torment of the Metals" recasts the Doors' "The End" as Krautrock. But though this record was raised on radio, no cuts are obvious singles, especially with Timms haunting the back of the mix. A college party soundtrack this is not.

For all the references this record evokes, it feels elusive. The band seems like it's working from deep within its influences. Songs are layered yet minimal. No jam sections here-- every note is in its place. The result is a studied diligence that's appealingly austere, yet frustratingly restrained. Black Math Horseman have potent ingredients, but they cook them at a simmer. That makes Wyllt a smooth listen, but it rarely boils over. Most attempts to do so merely raise bubbles.
Classic rock was scary once; Black Math Horseman could make it scary again.

BATTLEFIELDS - Thresholds of Imbalance 2009 (get it!!!)
Debut full length album from the Americans. Heavy metal and brutal vocals. Slow tempo and heavy distortion. This album is one out of a lot of garbage among the genre of modern metal. It can be the soundtrack of a rainy day and at the same time it can be the follower of a hot, sunny noon in a beach. It is a dirty myth or a heavy stone rolling down the slope and dive directly in the sea… Their doom is ambient and their ambient is sludgy. There is an unfamiliar rhythm and melodies which you can’t find it among heavy and doom metal releases. ‘Thresholds of Imbalance’ is an album that will surely satisfy many fans who are have trying to find all the shades of a fantastic release like this one in the next few listenings of them. Give time to the compositions. The tracks should concern all the underground doom metal fans who are searching for the perfect mix of hardcore, metal, doom and electronic ambient experimentation. There is a metalgaze smell around the atmosphere.Quite phenomenally, actually. Their success comes not only with superb execution, but also with a songwriting mentality that is fundamentally different than a great chunk of their peers. While many bands are concerned with thick, sludgy grooves and melodic atmosphere, Battlefields secured a leading spot by pushing their sound into a more desolate corner of the genre. The grooves and the ambience still make their appearances, but an impressively depressing feel and an austere visual aesthetic are the front-and-center elements that drive the record's excellence.

O.S.I. - Blood (2009)
OSI, a supergroup composed of a merry-go-round of players in the progressive rock/metal world but with a nucleus containing Kevin Moore (Dream Theater, Chroma Key) and Jim Matheos (Fate's Warning), will be releasing their 3rd album, Blood, in the United States on May 17th. We got a chance to preview this record, and have two reviews prepared - one from a longtime fan of OSI and the other from someone who has never heard of the band.A low, growling bass line and piercing guitar riff layer nicely over the album’s ubiquitous electronic effects and Gavin Harrison’s well thought out drum patterns. “You helped me to cut our losses.. cause dreaming isn’t living.. don’t come home”. Our character has obviously made a choice, I don’t know if it was just running away, or if it ended in death (maybe death and war are just metaphors here), but I’m going to keep listening to the album until I figure it out. Like the other albums in OSI’s catalog, “Blood” is fairly short (47 minutes and change), and it always leaves me wanting more.
Overall, I think Blood is the most complete album that OSI has made – I tried to find a common thread in all of the tracks linking them together, but I have no idea if I’m on the right track or not. I don’t really give a damn either, though, because the story of this nameless character that is running away from something and has an inner struggle which results in perhaps the wrong side winning is what I hear when I listen to this album. I think that “Terminal” and “Stockholm” could have been left off this CD in order to maintain a better flow between tracks – but as a fan of OSI, I’m going to keep listening and maybe I’ll find something I didn’t see before.

Mamiffer - Hirror Enniffer

Like an adamant darkening mist, Mamiffer’s Hirror Enniffer is a skulking presence that persists in its sense of despair only to evolve into distant calm right at the point when all hope appears lost.
Hirror Enniffer is Mamiffer’s debut and it breathes with all of the artistic sensibility one would expect from a musical visionary like Coloccia. Her sense of sound, her sense of feeling through sound, is exhibited in profound ways that intensify the experience with portions of classical, noise, and atmospheric rock.Hirror Enniffer comes like a dream, like an unrelenting vision that persists in deepening the tunnel until the bottom is all but forgotten. The tones are lush and somewhat damp, offering a glistening haze that carries through all six hypnotic tracks.
Mamiffer’s Hirror Enniffer is dream music. It is the soundtrack in one’s head that winds through scenes of open fields, through hands on blades of grass, through moonlit mysteries. It is also the last stop as the dream passes from glorious cheerfulness to disastrous nightmare. The eeriness is pitiless and the alluring tide of darkness is often interminable like an endless hall filled with locked red doors (“Suckling a Dead Litter”).

Music like this cannot merely be described; music like this must be felt.

Mamiffer’s debut is a beautiful piece of unremitting dream music, an arc of soft diaphanous emotion wrapped in pieces of classical music and brilliant noise. Hirror Enniffer is constructed out of the materials that engage our minds, fuel our dreams, and reveal our hopes.

ISIS - WAVERING RADIANT

The music of ISIS is a suitable metaphor for their 12-year career: patient, meticulous, fraught with tension and gradually building towards an apex of seismic proportions.

From the hypnotically bludgeoning down-tuned riffs of their early years to the gracefully sprawling passages on their pivotal sophomore album ‘Oceanic' and continuing through the intricate rhythmic textures and increased melody of 2006's ‘In The Absence of Truth', ISIS have successfully navigated the process of growing and evolving without disavowing their initial vision.

There is no consensus among ISIS's cult-like fan base as to which album serves as the ultimate document of their art. Each record is a piece in the puzzle. Consequently, to brand their latest offering, ‘Wavering Radiant', as the pinnacle of their achievements would be folly, yet it's a tempting proclamation.

The factors that defined ISIS in the past are still present, but the band manipulates its tactics and strategies with a refined sense of purpose and a heightened knack for nuance. They've extrapolated on the polar nature of their music, it's simultaneously their most challenging and accessible music to date.

LUSTMORD - The Dark Places of the Earth

In the previous two Lustmord releases, "Juggernaut" and "[ O T H E R ]", Brian Williams decided to take a new approach and intermix guitar with his erie sound-scapes. Similar to his release with the Melvins, these albums embodied more than his usual dark ambient releases. But while this experimentation was highly acclaimed by most fans, it left some listeners wanting a more "traditional" record.

"The Dark Places of the Earth" is just that. After his release of "[ O T H E R ]", Lustmord decided to strip all of the guitar from the album and remix it down to something more sinister. The end result was a "reduced" version of the album that will leave you with visions of monstrous things dancing in your head. "The Dark Places of the Earth" is a true return to form for Lustmord, not seen since his "Rising" album back in 2006.
